The Municipal Chief Executive for Sunyani West, Hon. Martin Obeng says Chief executives did their best to ensure the referendum was successful.
Speaking to Nana Akosua Ansah during the midday news on Dinpa 91.3FM Monday, Hon. Obeng said, it became necessary for the President to cancell the referendum for the sake of the nation’s peace .
He added that, “looking at the division that occurred among the executives and members of the National House of Chiefs, it was prudent the decision was postponed so that a National consensus was reached”.
The amendment of Article 55(3) would have pave way for political parties’ participation in the District Level Election and consequently, Parliament would also have amended the Article 243 (1) for the mandate to appoint MMDCEs by the President to change for the electorate rather to elect them (MMDCEs) as their Superintendents at the local level.
But the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, called off the holding of the Referendum of 17th December, 2019, citing the lack of a broad, national consensus amongst key stakeholders and the populace.
