Chiefs who endorse politicians are carried away by emotions – Ogyeahoho

President of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II has said that, traditional authorities who endorse political candidates and promise a percentage of votes for them do so out of emotions.

He noted that, the Chiefs who are carried away by emotions endorse the candidates for resolving their problem that have confronted them for years.

He questioned why a chief with one vote will promise a huge percentage of votes that he cannot guarantee for a candidate.

Most Political Analyst and well meaning Ghanaians have expressed worry over the growing phenomenon of traditional leaders endorsing political candidates especially ahead of the major election.

Speaking on Dinpa anopa bosuo show on Dinpa 91.3FM Monday November 17, the Paramount Chief of Sefwi Anhwiaso Traditional Area said, ”some of the Chiefs are carried away by emotions because a candidate had resolved a long standing problem that has confronted the community. When successive governments have failed to resolve such problem, but a particular candidate or government do so the Chief as part of expressing his appreciation is carried away by emotions.”

”We (House of Chiefs) have initiated moves and talks to deal with such endorsement. However, the politicians have realized that the Chiefs who endorse them only pronounce percentages of votes for fun. You(chief) have only one vote, your wife has one, you can’t even guarantee which party and candidate your wife should vote for. Why then do you speak on behalf of your entire subjects?”

The Paramount Chief of Sefwi Anhwiaso Traditional Area defeated Togbe Afede XIV in a landslide victory of 47 votes against 25 to be elected as the President of the National House of Chiefs on Thursday November 12.

Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II commenting on the sudden demise of former President J.J Rawlings said, I was devastated upon hearing the news. My condolences goes out to the Wife and Children, the family, the President and the entire nation.
