Director of Communications for the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Felix Mantey, has expressed disappointment in the filing fees set by the Electoral Commission of Ghana, saying the EC is selling democracy to Ghanaians.
Mr. Mantey described the EC’s decision to increase the filing fee for Presidential candidates by one hundred percent as unacceptable and ridiculous and urged them to reduce it.
The Electoral Commission in a press briefing earlier on Monday stated that presidential candidates for this year’s elections are required to pay GH¢100,000 as filing fees to enable them to qualify to take part in the elections. Parliamentary candidates are also required to pay GH¢ 10000 which saw no increment.
The EC Chair Madam Jean Mensa also announced that filing of nomination forms begin on Monday, October 5 to Friday, October 9.
The nomination forms would be available on the EC’s website from 6:00 pm Monday while candidate access the form with a unique password, the EC added.
“This 100% increment suggest that the election is on sale but we must draw the EC’s attention to the fact that democracy is not for sale”, Mantey said.
“Why is the commission allowing persons who want to be political leaders to pay this huge amount. Meanwhile, the EC is been funded by the tax payers money. The EC is not a profit making entity. The money is unacceptable.”
Speaking to Akua Nyarko Abronoma, host of Dinpa Anopa Bosuo on Dinpa 91.3FM Tuesday, the communication Director said, ”Even the International communities are laughing at us. Some of us never expected this from the EC Chair who had earlier condemn this act of the commission only for her to get the mandate and do the worse.”
He noted that, the EC’s posture is a clear sign of thievery and its seeking to discourage multi party democracy.
