President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said that the leaders and people of the neighbouring states have been reassured by Ghana’s commitment to the agenda of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The president made the remarks while interacting with a group of Ghanaian residents living in Cape Verde.

“Everywhere I have been so far, I have been met with a lot of enthusiasm and warmth, because people are reassured about Ghana’s role in ECOWAS, and, to me, that is very important. If we can make a success out of ECOWAS, it will help us a lot in the economic development of our country.”

As other economic unions elsewhere in the world such as the European Union and the North America Free Trade Agreement falters, the reassured commitment from Ghana, the second biggest economy in the bloc, would come as a strong indication of unwavering support towards greater regional integration.

The president has toured a number of ECOWAS member countries since taking office in January 2017 including the Gambia, Togo and Senegal.

The president has also used these visits to deepen bilateral relations between Ghana and the individual countries.
